  • Naming Convention

Renaming a page during process of website update may cause lots of errors if not done properly. Please remember, that all changes to page name have to be followed by appropriate changes to existing links. Otherwise, links will be redirecting users to old version of a page which does not exist. This will generate 404 errors.

  • Copying Pages

Copying pages in Episerver is a quick and reliable way of building new pages based on existing ones. However, this approach should not be used for updating content of an existing page. A number is automatically added to a copied page's name. Example below shows the bad practice in copying pages for content update purposes (please see Fig 2 - Multiple exhibitor directory pages).

In Episerver, each new page inherits name of a copied page. Please note, that there is always a number added to it. For example, copy of a page with name Exhibitor-Directory will be called Exhibitor-Directory1. All existing links will be still redirecting users to Exhibitor-Directory until parameters are changed. If an original page was removed, links will be redirecting to a non-existing page. As a result, 404 error will be generated.

  • Steps to follow

Whenever possible keep an original page and edit its content. Creating pages with random numbers at the end of their names is not a good practice. Names should be meaningful and as short as possible.

If creating a copy is necessary, make sure that a new page is renamed right after an original page is removed.

If a name has to be changed, then make sure that all other pages are also updated. Update all links with a new page name.
